Positioned within an existing HDB enclave, this was the centrepiece of the revamp of an existing hair salon, with clientele coming from the heartlands as well as district 10 in search for affordable facial and hair treatments.
As price point is an important factor, the design requires a frontage that is not intimidating. This inspired the creation of a welcoming “community space” that attracts a certain enquiry, playing up the “kaypoh-ness” of the existing community. Neighbourhood ‘aunties’ are invited to sit, call out the ‘ah boys’ to the “secret” salon and have their daily cup of tea while chit-chatting with their peers. Materials were kept familiar and grounded with allusion to HDB furniture.
